Special remarks on general readings, conference proceedings and information about manufactures are welcome for scientists who intend to use these methods for the first time. It can be recommended especially for teaching at univerities and technical colleges. Nevertheless, the book brings many interesting facts for specialists, too. The pages index facilitates the finding of methodical and material-related terms.

There are only a few critical remarks. In comparism to all the other methods mentioned, the chapter about Scanning Auger Microscopy seems to be tooshort, although it is briefly referred to again in the final twenty first chapter.

This should be altered in a second edition. This may provide enough subject-matter for a volume 2C. In summary one can state, that the volume 2B gives a very comprehensive account of the theoretical and practical principles as well as applications, and together with the first part of the volume, of the most important methods. It should be available in any analytical laboratory and in libraries in the field of materials science.

It is recommended to students for use in addition to lectures about materials characterization, semiconductor and solid state enginearing.
